West Prairie Junior/Senior High School will host a variety show on Friday, May 9 at 10 a.m. in the school gym. The community is invited to attend this fun, free event showcasing student talent and school spirit. The performance coincides with a 12:30 p.m. early dismissal day.
The school recently acquired a new stage. It was most recently used for prom, and it will be used again for the variety show and graduation.
Attendees can support the 7th grade class, led by Grant Rogers, by purchasing baked goods before and after the variety show. Be sure to stop by the bake sale table on your way in or out to grab a sweet treat and contribute to a great cause.
There are a total of six different skits. Sophomore Timmy Todd has been involved with performing for two years now. “My favorite skit is where there is a driver’s ed class, and we have a substitute teacher, and he has really bad anger problems. By the end of it, one of us gets put in the hospital.”
Between skits, each grade level from 7th through 12th will take the stage for a dance or lip-sync performance as part of a friendly competition. Students will compete in various categories, with multiple awards up for grabs. The goal is to involve all grade levels and promote school spirit. Hosting the event during the school day, rather than in the evening, helps ensure full student participation and support.
Connor Sullivan co-sponsors the variety show alongside Meredith Gravina. The pair has been involved with the school’s Drama Club for four years, during which they have directed two plays and organized two variety shows. Due to the transition into the newly renovated building in Colchester—and the challenges of adjusting to a new performance space—they have opted to produce variety shows in recent years. “I enjoy having fun with my students after school hours, but it does get really busy and stressful,” Sullivan said.
The variety show will take place at West Prairie Junior/Senior High School, located at 600 S Hun Street in Colchester, on Thursday, May 9 at 10 a.m. Community members, families, and friends are encouraged to attend and enjoy a morning of entertainment, school spirit, and student talent.
