Claire DeGraaf joined the teaching staff at the beginning of this school year (2025-26) as the new art teacher. She is an inspiring young teacher, and she knew she wanted to be an art teacher after being inspired by her high school art teacher. Welcome to West Prairie, Miss DeGraaf! We’re happy you’re here with us!
WP Press: Why did you choose to major in art?
CD: I took art all four years and high school and had a great connection with my art teacher, Mr. Applebee. He inspired me to pursue art education!
WP Press: Why did you choose West Prairie?
CD: I chose West Prairie as it seemed like a supportive, tight-knit community where I would be encouraged to grow as a new teacher.
WP Press: What are you hoping to accomplish this year?
CD: This year, I am hoping to connect with my students while feeling secure in the content I teach and my classroom management.
WP Press: What are some of your hobbies?
CD: I love to walk my dog, paint, and cook. I try to find balance in my everyday life to incorporate things that bring me joy.
WP Press: What are your thoughts on the new policies regarding phones?
CD: I really love them! I know it may take some getting used to, but I think it encourages engagement in class and accelerates learning.
WP Press: What is your favorite class to teach and why?
CD: It changes all the time, depending on the day or unit. I find that teaching drawing can be difficult as some people have the mindset that “they can’t draw” and have a hard time getting out of it. You can learn how to do anything with practice! I love teaching painting––no matter how messy it gets.
